12th European Forum on Music – Equity in Music

Sofia, Bulgaria, 5-7 June 2024

csm_EFM_2024_design_e812fdd78c

The European Forum on Music (EFM) is back with its 12th edition ‘Equity in Music’ and we can’t wait to welcome you in Sofia, Bulgaria from 5 to 7 June 2024.

The term “equity” can be understood in many ways but the most common is that in relation to fairness and a situation in which everyone is treated equally.

However, equity goes beyond giving everyone “a seat at the table”, it is also about a commitment to making that table bigger and fairer to all people irrespective of sex, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity, religion or other status as stated in Goal 10 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) “Reduce inequality within and among countries”.

The music sector in Europe boasts rich diversity, a powerful asset enabling widespread connection across societies both within Europe and globally. Yet, we must ask: is this diversity truly reflected in every aspect of music, from activities to market access and involvement? The EFM will provide the space to exchange on the current state of equity in music. From addressing geographical disparities to enhancing music education, navigating digital transformations, and shaping supportive political frameworks, the EFM offers a platform for crucial conversations and exchanges.

The EFM will explore some of the changes the music sector should consider making if it wants to create a truly equitable and diverse musical future. Because simply opening doors isn’t enough.

Come and join music professionals and art enthusiasts from all over Europe, as they delve into the topic of ‘Equity in Music’ and explore what kinds of projects have been carried out to advance equity in the music sector and what kind of future the sector is building.

The European Forum on Music (EFM) will foster personal exchanges and strengthen relationships between organisations, projects, and individuals. At the EFM you will be able to meet key actors, and to participate in a variety of sessions, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and networking sessions.

The EFM 2024 is organised by the European Music Council in cooperation with the Bulgarian Music Association. It will take place at Toplocentrala Centre for Contemporary Arts.

The European Music Council is one of first fifteen European cultural networks to achieve the SHIFT Eco-Certification

A year on from the launch of the pilot SHIFT Culture Eco-Certificate with European cultural networks, Creative Carbon Scotland (CCS), together with their auditing partners Green Leisure Group (GLG) from the Netherlands, have announced that 15 networks, including the European Music Council, have achieved their certification with a further network working towards it.

Participating networks have strived to implement the SHIFT Eco-Guidelines for Networks that were developed during the original SHIFT project. Each network has implemented the mandatory guidelines in their own network organisation, participated in peer audits with their fellow participants and attended a combined development workshop in Brussels. Finally, GLG has used the guidelines to audit each network, which assured the credibility and integrity of the certification process.

The implemented guidelines were developed and designed specifically for network organisations, which tend to be small in size but large in the scope of their influence, with most of their environmental impact stemming from travel. The buddy and peer audit system has connected networks with each other around climate action.

The eco-certificate pilot phase will continue for another year and is a collaborative journey and joint learning experience for all. Together with CCS and GLG, we learned that while many participating organisations are stretched to capacity, the eco-guidelines provide a clear framework for effective climate action that each organisation can build on. A few of the participating  networks  are working closely on issues of climate justice, which is a challenge we continue to tackle together. In 2024, the participating networks will implement their optional guidelines from the framework and meet again to review and strengthen the guidelines according to ongoing participant experience, with the support of CCS.

New network organisations are invited to join the process from 2024 onwards. Interested European organisations can contact Caro Overy – caro.overy@creativecarbonscotland.com – for more information.

About MusicAIRE:
MusicAIRE is a Music Moves Europe funded initiative aimed at supporting the recovery and sustainability of the music sector in the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic. Born out of the need for an innovative recovery plan and aiming to provide tailored solutions and to promote a green, digital, just, and resilient future for the European music ecosystem, MusicAIRE launched two open calls for applicants from the 27 Member States and non-EU countries participating in the Creative Europe Programme. Since April 2022, the MusicAIRE programme has proudly supported the implementation of 51 projects across Europe and contributed to empowering the sector for a dynamic and effective recovery.

It fostered peer-learning, the sharing of experiences, and collaborative policy development, allowing stakeholders to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry.

Now, at the end of this journey, we want to bring the music sector together to gain a deeper understanding of the projects’ achievements and to take a look forward to the promising future of the European music sector.
